In 1598, Lutheran pastor Philipp Nicolai composed hymn texts as he lay gravely ill during an outbreak of the plague in Unna, Germany that took the lives of over 1,300 residents. Against all odds, Nicolai recovered and penned "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme" - an expression of hope, which would later be immortalized in this cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach. As our community emerges from a global pandemic, the Chorale presents a concert of thanksgiving and remembrance with works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Imant Raminsh, Jennifer McMillan, and Kansas City's own Kurt Knecht.
